How a Rookie Copywriter Landed Ongoing Work At A Copy Agency

Before

Josh is a full-time professor who wanted to spend more time with his kids. He hoped to start a career as a copywriter but after learning the craft for two years, he still didn’t have a single client.

Using Escape Velocity

He discovered how to go from “procrastinator” to “action taker” and get his name out so clients would hire him.

After

Josh landed a part-time agency job and is on track to become a full-time copywriter. Once that happens, he’ll have complete control over his income and schedule.

“I needed to be home more...”

Joshua Bowen is a professor at a community college.

His busy work schedule means he doesn’t get to be with his family as often as he would like. For example, he has to rush off to work every morning rather than spend that time with his young kids.

Josh started to look for a new career. He wanted a job that would give him more control over his schedule and income.

He discovered copywriting and thought it was a perfect fit. As he says:

“With my teaching schedule, I’m at class at 7 AM, so I’m not able to be around and help kids get ready for school. And then I come in late in the afternoon...

I wanted family time and a flexible schedule. With copywriting, it’s not a “punching the clock” kind of job. And you get paid on results and the value you bring.”

“It was a grind…”

Josh began to study copywriting. He devoured books and podcasts but found a major problem…

Most of the material out there was about how to write better copy. There was very little on how to launch a successful freelance career. Josh wanted to know how to find clients, what to charge, and how to manage his business.

He found a program on how to land work through Upwork.com. He used it to get a few low-paying gigs writing blogs. But getting those jobs took so much time and effort they weren’t worth it. Josh knew he couldn’t continue like this.

“Upwork was too much of a grind…

It was a lot of constantly looking for new clients rather than building authority as Kevin talks about in Escape Velocity...”

“I needed to move from consuming to creating...”

Josh continued to learn about copywriting. But even after two years, he still didn’t have any clients.

Then, he discovered Kevin Roger’s podcast, Copy Chief Radio. Josh joined Copy Chief shortly afterward. And he used the trainings inside the membership to improve his writing skills.

When Kevin mentioned his Escape Velocity program, Josh thought it was perfect. Because Escape Velocity is designed to help new copywriters get clients and get their careers off the ground. And that’s exactly what Josh needed.

There was however, a big problem.

Josh viewed himself as a perfectionist. He bought tons of copywriting courses but never did anything with them because he was afraid he’d do something wrong. So he thought Escape Velocity would be yet-another program he wouldn’t use.

But unlike those other programs, Escape Velocity came with coaching and mentorship. Josh realized that personalized would give him the push he needed to stop procrastinating and put himself out there.

Josh shares why he joined Escape Velocity.

“Am I doing this right?”

Josh knew he was a good writer. But he wasn’t sure if he was a good copywriter. His writing sounded nice, but would it sell?

Through the Escape Velocity, Josh became confident in his copywriting. Because during the program, he and the other members were asked to create samples of their copy.

Kevin and Rachel Mazza, the two Escape Velocity coaches, then looked over everyone’s samples. They let people know what they did well and ways to improve them.

Josh’s samples were approved right away. This feedback proved to Josh that he could write copy. And he now had quality samples that would impress potential clients. So he could land jobs more easily despite not having any experience.

“I’m confident as a writer, but as a copywriter, I was like, “Am I doing this right?

You can write things that sound good, but that doesn’t mean it will sell. Part of Escape Velocity was the validation of ‘Yes, you can do this, and you’ll be successful at it.’”

“Here’s how to get clients quickly…”

The biggest thing holding Josh back from a successful copywriting career was fear.

He was afraid to put himself out there. So he never did any outreach to get clients.

But Escape Velocity changed all that.

First, Josh discovered a simple, step-by-step way to land clients fast.
He even got proven outreach emails he could use.

And he learned how to take control of the conversation and close the deal.

Just as important, Josh got the support and mentorship he needed to finally take action.

He no longer worried, “Am I doing this right?” because he had experienced coaches guiding him. And Escape Velocity was filled with other copywriters who supported him and held him accountable.

“It wasn’t just, ‘Do these assignments and submit them.’ Everything was public, and you could get feedback.

Rachel and Kevin did a good job coming back and providing support but also pushing people. They’d say, ‘You wrote the outreach emails, now who will you send them to?’”

“I had no idea what to charge...”

Josh now knew how to get potential clients to notice him.

But he wasn’t sure how to price himself. There was so much conflicting information online about what copywriters charged that he didn’t know what to believe.

Through Escape Velocity, he discovered what rates worked for him. And he learned how to charge fees made him and his clients happy.

“Before I had no idea what I should charge. [Escape Velocity] helped me establish a range of possibilities, so I don’t hear ‘that’s way too cheap’ or ‘That’s crazy, I’ll never pay that.”

“I got my first paying client…”

Escape Velocity helped Josh get in the habit of reaching out to clients. He even began sending outreach emails before the course ended.

Josh didn’t have a ton of time to dedicate to this. After all, he still worked full-time and had a family to take care of.

But putting in a few hours a week soon paid off.

Josh’s first client was another member of Escape Velocity. He was a business owner who was impressed by all the helpful posts Josh wrote in the Escape Velocity forum.

A month after landing this client, Josh went to Copy Chief Live. He brought writing samples, and one of the marketing agencies there was so impressed they hired Josh.

“My first client came directly from Escape Velocity.

He said he liked the posts and feedback I was giving... and he wanted to hire me…”

“That one job paid for Escape Velocity…”

After landing that first job, Josh earned back all the money he spent on Escape Velocity -- and then some.

The second job he landed at the agency turned into ongoing work. He’s now been with them for six months. And though he could take on more work if he wanted, right now, his teaching job and family come first. So Josh doesn’t spend more than 5-15 hours a week on copywriting.

Despite his limited hours, copywriting has already given Josha a nice side-income. He and his wife used the money he earned from the agency to beef up their Emergency Savings fund. And they were able to buy Christmas presents for their kids without putting it on a credit card.

Josh plans to finish out another semester or two at school. After that, he’ll transition to copywriting full-time.

“By the end of the summer or this winter, I’ll be able to cut the rope and do copywriting full-time… I could have done it sooner if I had put everything into the stuff we learned in Escape Velocity.”
