How Angie Made the
Leap From Employee to Successful Freelance Copywriter Despite No Formal Copywriting Training

Before

Angie was burnt out at her job. She wanted to become a freelancer so she could have more free time and travel the world.

Working with Kevin

Despite having no formal copywriting training, she discovered how to use “Authority Content” to become an in-demand copywriter.

After

Freelancing allowed Angie to work half as much. She’s now a Copy Chief for Jeff Walker and is free to live and work from anywhere.

"I was working myself into an early grave..."

Angie Colee was a copywriter for a company in San Francisco.

But the job made her miserable.

She spent 10-12 hours a day in the office. And often had to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Despite all that, she only earned enough to pay bills. And there was a tight cap on what she could earn regardless of how well she did.

Angie wanted to break free from her corporate job and work for herself. But she didn’t have time to get her freelance career off the ground.

"I was so burnt out. I had a hard time doing my actual job, let alone side-gigs. I had no passion or motivation at all."

"How am I going to pay the mortgage?"

Angie knew she needed to get her name out there.

But she didn’t know how.

She began posting in copywriting forums. Hoping it would build her authority and attract clients.

But as she later learned, she went about it all wrong.

"I tried so hard to create authority. I’d go into forums and yell “I'm great listen to me!”

I thought business was about posturing and not admitting weakness."

“I needed help reaching that next level…”

Angie spent years posting in forums and applying for work on job boards. But it didn’t attract any clients.

So she went to John Carlton event for help. And met Kevin Rogers there.

She got on Kevin’s email list and joined Copy Chief. When he opened his Real Free Life coaching program, Angie was eager to join.

But she didn’t have the money.

And her partner at the time was against her freelancing.

Angie didn’t see any other options, though. So she found a way to make it work. And joined the course in May 2016.

"The price almost held me back. But I knew this was the step I needed to level up. So I put it on a credit card and bet on myself."

Angie reveals how people didn’t believe in her.

"Everyone’s going to think I’m an idiot"

Because of her busy schedule, Angie struggled to keep up with the weekly assignments in Real Free Life.

But the accountability built into the program helped her get things done.

Her biggest hurdle, however, came when she was asked to post Authority Content.

These are articles and posts designed to build your reputation. So people who know who you are and want to work with you.

Angie was scared to do it. Because she didn’t have any “formal” copywriting training.

So she thought whatever she said would be wrong. And people would find out she was a fraud.

"I was afraid if I opened my mouth people would see that I don’t know what I’m talking about. All these high-level marketers would think I’m an idiot."

"I was afraid if I opened my mouth people would see that I don’t know what I’m talking about. All these high-level marketers would think I’m an idiot."

But her fears never came true.

Because in Real Free Life, she learned that authority was about teaching. It’s about sharing your perspective -- not arguing who’s right or wrong -- which is what she did before.

People appreciated her insights. And before long, they saw her as an authority.

"I’d be at a marketing event, and people would be like “Oh, you’re Angie! I heard about you.

I wasn’t marketing myself, sending emails or applying for jobs. But by posting in Copy Chief, my name got around."

Angie leaving helpful advice in the Copy Chief forum

“It was my best month ever...”

Angie posted in Copy Chief every week for 7 months.

She spent 30-60 minutes a week giving feedback and advice. This helped her become well-known in the industry.

At the same time, Kevin sent her referrals after she graduated from Real Free Life. As a result, she soon had the financial cushion she needed to quit her job.

This gave her the financial cushion she needed to quit her job.

In December 2016, Angie put in her 2 weeks notice.

In January, she began to reach out to people.

Her authority content had created all these new connections. So she quickly had more work than she could handle.

She realized she could transition to freelancing without any downgrade in lifestyle. In fact, her lifestyle would only improve...

“I reached out to everyone I knew in marketing. I just said
Hey I’m available if you need help. That was my best month ever.”

Angie’s journey with Real Free Life

"Jeff Walker called me…"

The next month, a copywriter Angie met through Real Free Life introduced her to internet marketing legend Jeff Walker.

He needed copy help. And Angie landed the job.

A few months later, Kevin Rogers offered her a job as well.

Angie had posted so many helpful comments inside his forum that he didn’t want to lose her. So he decided to put her on his staff.

Between these to jobs, Angie makes enough to live more comfortably than she when she was a corporate employee. And she works just 30-35 hours a week total.

Best of all, she loves her job. It’s far less stressful than her old one. And she’s able to be herself and have fun with her clients.

"Jeff Walker called me and teased me about my vacation when he found out I was going to Fiji. It’s amazing talking to someone I used to admire as a buddy. And he was happy for me. That’s the kind of client relationship I want."

"I significantly upgraded my lifestyle"

Freelancing allowed Angie to cut her work hours in half. So she’s now free to live the lifestyle she wants.

For example, she’s now able to focus on the things she loves: music and travel.

"I hadn’t left the country since 2006. But I made a goal to see 4 new countries in 2018. I did two by March -- Fiji and Colombia.

I also have time to practice my art, learn new instruments, and do things that replenish my creativity."

"I’m working on a new offer and enjoying life"

With all this extra time, Angie is exploring other ways to grow her business.

She noticed clients and copywriters have a hard time working together. And she wants to help bridge the gap for both groups.

So she launched a side business coaching writers. She loves the work, and it’s begun to take-off.

"There are a lot of good copywriters out there but they sell themselves short. Or they don’t know how to handle clients.

I want to help copywriters and business owners work together without each of them fearing they’re getting ripped off."

“You have to bet on yourself”

Early on, Angie doubted she could make it as a freelance copywriter.

She didn’t believe posting “Authority Content” would work. And didn’t think she had anything useful to share.

But she decided to trust the process and bet on herself. That combination has taken her career to the next level.

If you’re thinking you can’t have that same success for one reason or another, Angie has some advice for you.
